2024 Counterfeit Exhibit & Auction | Spartanburg Art Museum

This past Fall I was excited and honored to be asked to be one of the artists for this year’s Counterfeit Exhibit & Auction hosted by the Spartanburg Art Museum. This will be the second time for this event and features over 20+ artists from the Spartanburg/ Upstate, South Carolina region.

The premise of Counterfeit is each artist asked to participate selects a well-known work of art or well-known artistic style to “counterfeit” with each work of art to be auctioned off during a live auction event. Funds raised from each sale will benefit the Spartanburg Art Museum and the artists participating.

Who did I select to “counterfeit”? I thought about what I would like to do and narrowed my list of choices down to three artists - Ludwig Bemelmans (Author & Illustrator of the children’s book series, Madeline), Clement Hurd (Illustrator of Margaret Wise Brown’s eternal classic children’s book, Goodnight Moon) or Helen DuPré Moseley (1887-1984), a well-known Spartanburg, South Carolina artist.

I chose to recreate a work by Helen! I’ve loved her whimsical creatures for many years now and selected to recreate a work held in the Permanent Collection of the Spartanburg Art Museum. Ms. Moseley never titled her works and the painting I selected is titled, “Untitled (Six Figures)”.

Below you’ll find my version of “Untitled (Six Figures)” along with photos of my preparatory sketches and shots of the work in progress.

To learn more about the original painting and Helen DuPré Moseley, please visit the online Permanent Collection page for “Untitled (Six Figures”). Additional works are held by The Johnson Collection located in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
